ABOUT IES

The Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES) houses a professional degree program (M.En.) that trains students to become environmental professionals who will contribute to ensure an environmentally sustainable world. Words that describe the goal and mission of this masters degree are:

Interdisciplinary: We engage the complexity and ambiguity of environmental issues.
We integrate our program with research and academic strengths at Miami, governmental agenciess, and other environmental professionals.

Problem-solving: We stress environmental problem-solving, and we evaluate and design solutions for environmental problems.

Professional / Practical / Applied: We prepare students for work in public service, government, education, and nonprofit environmental organizations.

Competence:
Each student leaves the IES with a technical and academic strength in an area of concentration (focus area or discipline). This individualized strength complements the competence in computer use, measurements, and statistics required of all students.

Teamwork: The curriculum stresses and practices the ability to work in and lead interdisciplinary teams consisting of government officials, business leaders, academic professionals, and the public.

Communication: Effective communication of knowledge and information in oral, written, visual and electronic forms is essential to the environmental professional.

The IES program provides the tools for your success. Our masters degree is one of the oldest  Master of Environmental Science (M. En.) professional degree programs in the United States (since 1969). IES has its own teaching and research facilities, director, deputy directors, and administrative staff. IES also regularly engages in funded applied research that includes nearly all students and supports a few IES students. The IES program has excellent field and travel opportunities. Administrative offices and the academic program are housed in Boyd Hall. Approximately 105 University faculty members from 33 departments at Miami University actively participate in the program.

How do we do this?
OUR CURRICULUM:  We remain at the forefront of professional programs by meeting the needs of the environmental profession using a three-tiered program.  What is our three-tiered program?

ASSISTANTSHIPS and Financial Aid:  Yes. We have assistantships. It is in our mutual interest that each student is fully funded.    Find out more about financial aid and assistantship opportunities.
